Something about us. My name is Gene Gautro. Gene is a shortened version of Eugene which means well born. And I believe it's true because I was lucky enough to be born in south Louisiana's Cajun country. Yes I am Cajun. More accurately I am an Acadian. My ancestors were french people who were forced to leave Nova Scotia by the British in the mid 18th century. They sailed in ships down to the coast of Louisiana and settled the swamps and bayous. There they made a life and in the process created a cooking style that is loved around the world.
I grew up in a family that loved to eat and cook. My mother cooked very traditional Cajun food like Etoufee, court bouillon, red beans and rice, jambalaya and especially GUMBO. I've always had an interest in my mother's cooking and I learned a lot about what Real Cajun cooking means. But it wasn't until I married Jan that I really started to cook in earnest.
A little more about us. We get married!!!
Jan and I have been married for more than 36 years and we have enjoyed eating our way across Louisiana. From Lafayette to New Orleans, we have dined at restaurants, festivals, friends homes and highway vendors. We know Cajun food.
Jan is a foodie. She loves to eat and loves to cook. Our bookshelves are overflowing with cookbooks she has collected in more than 3 decades. Together we have cooked many dishes from the gourmet to the simple.
Jan is somewhat of a professional in that she has worked for a major food magazine and lives and breathes food every day. Today she does freelance work and helps me with my web site. She understands recipes and reminds me to keep it simple as I publish my gumbo recipes and build this site.Wondering about us? Cooking is our passion
A favorite hobby of ours is cooking and entertaining friends. We often will plan and prepare a new or out of the ordinary meal and invite friends over for an evening of food and wine. Those times are such great occasions for long and interesting conversations and to experience new and exciting dishes.
It should come as no surprise my favorite Louisiana food is gumbo. This is true for millions of people across our great country. It's due in part to the ease of preparation and flexibility of this uniquely Cajun dish. But mainly it is due to the FANTASTIC taste of gumbo.
Because we love having friends and family over, there have been many occasions to serve gumbo. Our guests always compliment me on my gumbo and many have asked for recipes and training on how to make this wonderful soup. I have always been happy to teach and give my recipes to those who ask. For me it is fulfilling to teach someone how to make my most favorite food and do it in the correct and traditional Cajun style.Boredom sparks an idea
I have always had an interest in learning. Maybe it's a curious disposition, but I get bored easily. I no longer can watch television and choose to either read or work on my computer in my spare time. But that gets a little humdrum too if you do it every evening. So in recent years I wondered if I could create some kind of business that I could operate in my spare time that would not interfere with my job or my marriage.
It would have to be a business that did not require my full time attention and it would have to be fun, interesting, profitable and one where I could work at my pace.
The idea that came to me was to start my on web site business. I have long wanted to create a web site but was challenged on what service to provide or how to get started. At the time I knew absolutely nothing about web design. I knew I could pay a web site developer a lot of money to design a site for me but I did not want to spend tons of money.
I decided since I know more about gumbo cooking than just about anything else and because I get so many requests to provide instruction and recipes that my site should be dedicated to gumbo cooking instruction and recipes. But how to get started was the big question. I browsed the internet looking for a service I could use but could not find anything that I thought was completely credible.
There are numerous web site hosting services out there and I looked at many of them. But it was and still is confusing to read about all the choices and then try to determine which ones are legitimate. It pays to be skeptical about all the hype and fantastic claims made by the many and varied web hosting services.
One of my interests is photography and while searching the internet for digital cameras and wildlife photography I found a web site that has some really great information specific to my interests. I bookmarked the site and would go back often to read and learn about cameras and taking wildlife pictures. It is a very interesting web site and it helped me get my photography hobby in motion. It is also well designed, is easy to use and I am quite impressed by it.
During one of my visits I found information about the site owner and how he came to develop his site. There was a link to a company named SBI. SBI stands for , Site Build It and this is the service he used to build and host his web site. That was my first introduction to SBI!. I bookmarked the SBI page and over the next two months would go back to look over what they had to offer. I'm not one to make impulse decisions but I knew after my first visit to SBI that this would be the company I would use to start my web site.Everything for the beginner and professional
SBI had everything I needed to get started. A comprehensive training package, an easy to use block by block web page builder, hosting service and a complete analytics package. It even has a tool to help me decide what the theme of my site should be.
As I said I don't do things on impulse. Although my first impression of SBI was positive, I took some time to check things out thoroughly. Finally as a birthday present to myself I bought SBI.
SBI helps you to turn any hobby, passion or skill into a viable online business. You probably don't even realize that almost any topic can make money with a website.
You need no programming skills or web design knowledge, no business and no product to sell. Just bring your brain and motivation. SBI has all the tools you need, and they take you by the hand and teach you step by step how to use everything.
They help you find the perfect topic for your site, to build it, to get traffic to it, and then they even teach you how to make money with it, no matter what it is about!
Have a look at the video tour to get an idea of how it works
I was not sure I could build a web site. I have no programing skills and knew nothing about html code. But after browsing the SBI information I became confident I could do it using the SBI system. This website was built with SBI, so you see... anyone can do it.
Do you have a skill or knowledge you would like to make money with? You can do it with a SBI web site. Even if you think you don't know enough about a subject to have a web site, SBI helps you with that too. It shows you how you can do research to create a site on a particular subject.
People often ask. How do I make money! At the moment mostly with advertising. You probably saw the links throughout my site that say "Ads by Google". Every time someone is interested and clicks on one I make money.
There are countless other ways to make money with a website: create your own egoods to sell, sell other people's products for a commission, get paid for leads and referrals and more. SBI shows you how to do all that.
You can get some more ideas from what other SBIers are doing. Just have a look at these Case Studies
I am so glad I chose SBI to help me with my site. It has been a fun learning experience and I like to tell other people about it because if I can build a web site on my own in my spare time I know anyone can do it.
